west side duplex

Perched high above the Hudson River in a landmark building, Riverside Design transformed two corner apartments into a light filled duplex with a large wrap terrace. The clients asked us to create an open plan for frequent entertaining and a relaxed lifestyle, yet would also provide a level of privacy.

We reconfigured the apartment into a lower level composed of a large cook’s kitchen, dining, and entertaining space that directly connects to a wrap around terrace. Upstairs, we created a private master suite with a freestanding bathtub, steam shower, exercise space, and dressing areas. We strategically placed wall openings, interior windows, and design elements to enjoy magnificent views from every space in the duplex.

American walnut sliding door panels give privacy when needed. The walnut panels are also a metaphor for trees of the extensively planted terrace and the treetops of Riverside Park below, and bring the garden into the apartment. A sculptural and simply detailed custom stair has a hand rubbed blackened steel finish that echoes industrial era furniture we selected for the space. Subtle colors allow the ephemeral quality of a day’s changing light to play a role within the architecture of the space.
